Posted: 11 May 2013 11:16 AM PDT

Some five months after making a huge splash at the Sundance Film Festival, Grand Jury Prize winner Fruitvale Station is making the rounds with its first trailer.

Starring Friday Night Lights' Michael B. Jordan and the amazing Octavia Spencer, Fruitvale Station recounts the last day of Oscar Grant, the 22-year-old who was killed by a police officer at a transit station in Oakland, Calif. on New Year's Day 2009.

The film is the first feature length project from Ryan Coogler, a 27-year-old director who grew up in Oakland.

Chad Michael Murray, Kevin Durand and Melonie Diaz also star in the picture co-produced by Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker.

Fruitvale Station, which was acquired by The Weinstein Company for around $2 million following its Sundance debut, is set to compete in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2013 Cannes Film Festival this month. The film will open stateside in limited release on July 12.

Anne Hathaway: Still Blonde, Still Fabulous

Anne Hathaway blonde Brooklyn hair

Anne Hathaway recently dyed her hair blonde. And it looks like she's keeping it, regardless of what haters and critics alike have been saying about the new look.

Since debuting her lighter locks and pixie cut at the 2013 Met Gala in New York City earlier this week, the Oscar-winning actress has been compared to Twiggy, Julia Roberts and designer Carolina Herrara.

Whether or not any attention’s been paid to the hair talk, it’s been business as usual for Ms. Hathaway. Post-Gala, the star has hit the red carpet for the Tate Americas Foundation Artists Dinner, walked her dog Esmeralda and gone for a coffee run in rainy Brooklyn (above) — all while proudly displaying her new ‘do.

Keep doing you, Anne, keep doing you.

J.J. Abrams Promises ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ Is ‘Bigger’ And ‘More Emotional’

Posted: 11 May 2013 07:06 AM PDT

Trekkies, buckle up — because Starfleet has bigger adventures on the horizon.

James Kirk, Spock and the entire U.S.S. Enterprise crew are blasting back into outer space in the highly-anticipated, action-packed Star Trek Into Darkness, J.J. Abrams‘ sequel to his reboot of the classic sci-fi franchise. And the director is confident that this film will leave the last in the dust.

“We wanted to approach this movie not as a sequel, but as a stand-alone movie so you never had to see the first film that we did or the original series,” Abrams told Celebuzz‘s Cory Lopez.  “But we wanted to make this movie, without question, a bigger movie, a more emotional movie, more action and more intensity.”

While the film will translate even for first-time Trek viewers, long-time Star Trek aficionados will surely find familiar elements from the Gene Roddenberry original in Into Darkness.

“We wanted to just kind of up the ante a little bit,” Abrams explained. “But if you are a fan, you will definitely see things that are callbacks for you and references to things that you know a love…. We're trying to give it a little bit more action and adventure, but we're still honoring the characters, and the paradigms, and the archetypes.”

“And what's been nice with Star Trek is that most of the fans, even those who were sort of doubting at the beginning, have come to appreciate that we really do honor what they know and love,” he continued. “I know for sure that you can't please everyone. And if you keep thinking from the outside in, 'What are they going to think? What are they going to think?' you can kind of get paralyzed with doubt and sort of second-guessing. So I try to approach this as authentically as possible.”

As for the future of the franchise, Abrams would certainly be open to taking the reigns again, though his helming of the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII could stand in the way timing-wise.

“There is no official conversation yet about a third one. If and when that happens, I'd be thrilled to have that conversation [of directing],” he said. “But depending on schedule, I may not be the person directing it. But I would definitely be involved as a producer.”

Stick with Celebuzz this week to see more coverage of Star Trek Into Darkness, including interviews with Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana and much more.

Prince Harry Sang ‘Happy Birthday’ To Missy Franklin Last Night

Posted: 11 May 2013 07:03 AM PDT

Don't worry, four-time gold medalist Missy Franklin, we probably would've reacted like that if a prince serenaded us on our birthday.

After touching down in Colorado Friday night, HRH Prince Harry of Wales headed to a reception held at a golf resort in Sedalia, just outside of Denver.

Among the distinguished guests was Franklin, whose birthday was made even sweeter when the prince and British Ambassador to the U.S. Sir Peter Westmacott broke out in "Happy Birthday."

"And the perfect way to end my 18th birthday? Meeting Prince Harry! It was a honor meeting him and I had a blast as always," Franklin wrote on her Twitter and Instagram accounts following the event.

Harry, 28, is expected to spend all of Saturday at the annual Warrior Games in Colorado Springs. Be sure to follow @RoyalReview for the latest updates.

The Mama’s Boys Club of Hollywood

Posted: 11 May 2013 07:15 AM PDT

In honor of Mother's Day, Celebuzz is taking a closer look at some of Hollywood's most talented men and the amazing mothers who brought them into the world.

For actors like Leonardo DiCaprio and Bradley Cooper, bringing mom as a red carpet date to the latest award show or movie premiere isn't anything out of the ordinary.

"She's a cool chick," Cooper told Details in its May 2013 issue, adding that he also lives with his mother. "We can hang. And she can roll with the punches. If that wasn't the case, there's no way."

In the music world, Justin Timberlake and Justin Bieber have always had a fan in their moms Lynn Harless and Pattie Mallette, respectively.

"Everybody knows I love #MyMom!," Bieber wrote on Twitter this week, along with a plug for 1-800 Flowers.com. "Mother's Day is on Sunday! Love your momma! Love u @pattiemallette."

Drake is so close to his mom Sandi Graham, she had a cameo in his music video for "Started From The Bottom," a song about the singer's life before he made it big.

Happy Mother's Day to all the mamas in Hollywood and beyond!

Following a Capitol Hill appearance that temporarily stopped work for dozens of female staffers, HRH Prince Harry of Wales kicked off the second day of his tour of the United States on a somber note.

On Friday morning, the 28-year-old royal arrived at Arlington National Cemetery in his British Army ceremonial uniform of the Blues and Royals. Harry laid a wreath with a personal note at Section 60. The handwritten note read, "To my comrades-in-arms of the United States of America, who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in the cause of freedom. Captain Harry Wales."

The prince also laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and a small bouquet of flowers at the John F. Kennedy memorial.

Harry then changed into his British Army camouflage and headed over to the Military Advanced Training Center of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md. to meet wounded U.S. soldiers.

The third-in-line to the British throne is due in Colorado on Friday night, where he'll attend a reception hosted by the British Consul-General to Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming Beverly Simpson. Selena Gomez Really Loves Her Some Hooters

Selena Gomez poses at a Boston Hooters

Selena Gomez has once again been spotted at one of her favorite classy eateries. No, the sexy starlet wasn’t dining out at a fancy Beverly Hills restaurant or a Michelin starred establishment. She was back at what seems to be an old SelGo standby: Hooters.

Selena tweeted, “Me and my Hooters….. smh :)” today along with a sassy pic of her just chillin’ with some Boston Hooters girls like it ain’t no thang.

Gomez is a obviously a huge fan of the busty franchise. She was chowing down at a New York location just two weeks ago and she told Harpers Bazaar back in March:

And when I was seven, my dad would go to Hooters to watch Spurs games. But he started noticing that when I would come, with my little pigtails, all the waitresses would be like, ‘Hey!’ So he ended up half spending time with me but with all those cute girls coming over.

Looks like not much has changed! Do you, Seleners.

On Friday, the expectant parents were spotted hanging out in the swanky Los Angeles neighborhood clad in co-ordinating garb.

Kardashian, 32, was seen rocking a black lace ensemble while her 35-year-old beau sported dark leather pants and a matching top.

Like a true jet-setting couple, the duo affectionately dubbed Kimye were in New York City earlier this week for the annual Met Gala.

“Baby you’re AWESOME,” Kardashian tweeted that night when her baby daddy took the stage to perform.

After that, the E! reality indulged in some spa time with pal Jonathan Cheban upon arriving to the east coast.

Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp Officially Join ‘Into the Woods’

Posted: 10 May 2013 02:50 PM PDT

Disney has officially announced its first three cast members for the upcoming screen adaptation of Into The Woods. Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp are set to star as well as British actor James Corden.

Streep and Depp, of course, require no introduction, but Corden — who is playing the Baker — will be mostly unfamiliar to American audiences. He did, however, win the Tony Award last year for his starring role in One Man, Two Guvnors. The film will be directed by Rob Marshall, who has previously directed the big screen adaptations of  Broadway hits Chicago and Nine.

Into the Woods, written by Stephen Sondheim, weaves the stories of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales together, taking characters from “The Little Red Riding Hood,” “Jack and the Beanstalk,” “Cinderella” and “Rapunzel.” It made its Broadway debut in 1987 and has been a favorite ever since. This is to be the first film adaptation of the play, however, after two previous planned productions fell through in the ’90s.

In its casting announcement released today, Disney also confirms that Meryl Streep will be playing the villainous (or is she?) Witch and Depp will play the Wolf. Both had been rumored to be attached to the project, but today’s announcement is the first official confirmation.

Streep and Depp have never worked together previously, though they were originally supposed to star together in Sweeney Todd, Streep’s role eventually went to Helena Bonham Carter.

According to Disney’s press release, none of the show’s other parts have been filled including the lead role of the Baker’s Wife. Filming is set to begin in September of this year in London.

I Try!: A 10-Day Master Cleanse, the Celebrity Diet for Masochistic Morons

Posted: 10 May 2013 04:11 PM PDT

It’s 7:42 a.m., Wednesday morning. I’m starting my day with a salt water flush, which means chugging a full glass of salt water, trying desperately not to gag and brushing my teeth immediately. This will be a part of my morning routine for the next week and a half as I try the master cleanse so you don’t have to.

The master cleanse is an extreme fasting diet endorsed by numerous celebrities including Gwyneth PaltrowBeyoncé and Jared Leto. It is especially popular amongst celebrities who are trying to slim down for an event or film role. Beyoncé did it before filming Dreamgirls in order to obtain the Twiggy-like figure of the era. Leto, on the other hand, cleansed in order to lose the 60 pounds he gained to play John Lennon’s killer Mark David Chapman in Chapter 27. Its brilliance is in its simplicity; for 10 days all you can “eat” is a “lemonade cocktail” made of warm water, lemon juice, cayenne pepper and maple syrup. While starving yourself for roughly the extent of Oktoberfest, the cajun lemonade is supposed to evacuate your digestive tract. And this is how you lose weight.

“These ingredients (excluding the water) contain powerful antioxidants and compounds that support the body’s natural ability to cleanse and rid itself of toxins and other harmful compounds we come into contact with regularly,” Lauren Minchen, a registered dietitian in New York City told me, to put it into scientific terms.

I am Jewish enough to know that the proper way to eat latkes is with apple sauce, but not Jewish enough to have fasted on Yom Kippur. This is the first time I’ve intentionally deprived my body of food. I do not really know what to expect, but by the time lunch rolls around, I am filled with a desire for food I’ve never experienced before. It’s not so much hunger as it is a childlike need to do exactly what I’m not supposed to. The fact that my body is so strongly rejecting a decision I’ve purportedly made for my wellness is my first clue that this is not the healthiest choice.

The master cleanse lets you shed weight like an old snake (Beyoncé reportedly lost 20 pounds in two weeks). But it is not an effective diet in that you’re likely to gain all the weight you lost back the second you quit pounding cayenne lemonade. As Minchen told me: “losing weight on a liquid-only diet supports muscle and water loss, with very little fat loss. … I have not recommended the master cleanse as a means of losing weight, and I would not recommend it for that purpose.”

If the idea of drinking 1/10 a teaspoon of cayenne pepper suspended in warm lemon juice doesn’t sound appetizing, it’s because it’s not. While your throat burns from citrus-induced acid reflux, your tongue stings. And this is how you spend your entire day, for ten days. I’ve not even finished a full day before the thought of mixing another one of these monsters nauseates me. The lemonade’s taste is not something you get used to. No matter how much you’ve consumed, it remains an assault on the taste buds. It’s then I start to worry about my breath, and the damage all this lemon juice is doing to the enamel on my teeth. There is some good news though: “Lemon juice can irritate tooth enamel; however, since this fast is generally meant to be followed for 10 days maximum, severe damage is unlikely,” according to Minchen. Cavities are, at this point, just about the only thing I don’t have to worry about, though I make a note in my phone to pick up some Crest Whitestrips when I’m done, just to be safe.

***
My alarm goes off Thursday morning and I jump awake from a dream I can’t remember, though I’m confident it involved carbohydrates. Day two of the master cleanse is when I start to feel side effects besides hunger pains I hadn’t even considered. My head pounds from a complete lack of caffeine in my diet. On my walk to work I feel dizzy and confused — something Minchen calls “brain fog” making it sound almost glamorous. There is, however, nothing glamorous about intentionally starving yourself for an extended period and pairing that with lemonade’s answer to laxatives.

The reason people eat is not just because cheese tastes magnificent, but because food provides the energy on which our entire bodies operate. Without any food, my body feels like The Little Engine That Absolutely Could Not. All I want to do is lie in bed all day. In fact, if I could just spend all day in bed, this would probably be a very easy 10 days. I imagine Gwyneth Paltrow holed up in a four-poster bed, surrounded by fresh linens and warm, damp towels. Her children have been instructed not to bother her for the next week and her home is run by a team of nannies and maids while Gwynnie craps out her weight in cayenne lemonade to prepare for the Oscars. The problem is, you and me as normal, non-famous human beings have responsibilities. We have jobs and families and friends and obligations for which “I’m drinking my weight in spiced lemonade” is not a valid excuse. At work I feel mentally exhausted. I’m slow and less productive, which I can’t imagine pleases my bosses. At this point, I would say that is the hardest part of this cleanse: having to maintain my regular schedule while starving myself.

Let me explain, the reason you lose weight on the master cleanse is not just because of its diuretic ingredients. There are no calories in water, lemon juice or cayenne pepper. This is the reason for the maple syrup. It isn’t pancake syrup you’re putting in your drink, it’s pure maple syrup  which has no added sugar and very little caloric content [???]. I calculated that I’m consuming about 315 calories a day; a feast for Kate Moss, this is far below my normal daily consumption. I am not working out while on the cleanse, but living in New York City means quite a bit of walking and I’ve calculated that I’m burning approximately 210 calories per day simply walking to and from work. It’s no wonder that my entire body feels like it’s threatening to shut down.

What the master cleanse lacks in complexity it also lacks in instructions. The only guidance given as to how much lemonade one is supposed to consume in a day is to drink a glass whenever you feel hungry which is all. the. damn. time. One of the things that makes diets like Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers so successful is that they make it easy for you. Eat this now, eat that later, etc. etc. ad infinitum. Being deserted on cayenne lemonade island can be sort of a confusing feeling, never knowing how much laxative lemonade is too much, and how little is too little.

***
The feeling of extreme hunger does, in fact, go away eventually. By Friday, I’m not hungry but I am exhausted. My resolve is tested by free bagels in the office, but I’m surprised how easy it is to pass. It’s hard to focus on anything but food and perhaps I’m overdramatizing this but in my head I swear I’ve forgotten what falafel tastes like. As for after work, it’s impossible to make plans with anyone because “going back to my apartment and watching me groan” is not exactly an exciting pitch. I decide to clean my room, but fall asleep at 9:30.

***

It’s Saturday morning and, thanks to Seamless, there is a tuna melt and a two-liter bottle of Diet Coke on its way to my apartment. After feeling dizzy for three days and an incident in a muggy subway station where I felt close to fainting, I’ve decided its time to call it quits. Since I’m not a masochist, I don’t own a scale. This leaves me with no way of knowing how much weight I’m losing, though if I had to make a guess, it’d be somewhere between zero and one pound. My clothes don’t fit any differently and no one has told me that I look slimmer.

I may have patently failed my mission, but I have learned a few things. Mostly that the master cleanse is terrifically horrifying experience and that the importance of close proximity to a private toilet cannot be overstated.

I Try! is a new semi-regular feature in which I try the weirdest celebrity trends so you don’t have to. Feel free to email me here with suggestions.

Justin Bieber Crushes Beers Like A Total Badass

Posted: 10 May 2013 03:14 PM PDT

He’s not poppin’ bottles — but I guess this will do for now.

Justin Bieber posted an Instagram photo of himself and a friend kicking back with a brewski in South Africa Friday.

In the snapshot, the “All Around the World” crooner is seen sporting a backwards baseball cap as he clutches a can of Amstel Lager.

“Beers in the jungle,” the 19-year-old wrote alongside the picture. Hours laters, he added on his Twitter, “Live life full.”

Now, before you get your panties in a bunch, it should be noted that it’s completely legal for the Biebs to consume alcohol as South Africa’s legal drinking age is 18. Therefore, this tween heartthrob is not so much as a rebel but more like a person enjoying his God given right to enjoy a beer.

However, what’s most shocking is not the fact that Bieber has decided to share this photo to his young and impressionable fans, but that he has chosen — and I’m quoting our in-office beer expert here — “a crap Dutch beer” to drink for the occasion.

“This is the cheapest beer you can get,” said Tom Freestone, the producer of The Daily Buzz and an alcohol-savvy Brit.

“You can quote me on it being a terrible beer.”

Kanye West Takes Down Steve Carell for ‘Anchorman’ Cameo

Posted: 10 May 2013 11:15 AM PDT

You stay classy, San Diego. I’m Kanye West?

That’s right — the rumors proved true. The rapper is the latest star to hop on the ever-more crowded cameo bandwagon for Anchorman: The Legend Continues.

The much-anticipated sequel, which will reunite original Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy Will FerrellPaul RuddSteve CarellChristina Applegate and David Koechner, has already thrown Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Sacha Baron Cohen and Jim Carrey in a fight sequence it’s been filming in Atlanta’s Woodruff Park.

Now it looks like West is throwing down, too, in a brawl that brings to mind the star-studded famous fray from the original film. While the studio is staying mum on his role, new shots from set show West — sporting a noteworthy fro — taking down Carrell’s character, Channel 4 News Team weatherman Brick Tamland, with a hockey stick of all things.

While some seem to have fallen victim in the scuffle, don’t fear — for Ron Burgundy can been seen standing tall, above the defeated. “Don't act like you're not impressed.”
